About The School

Over half a century of professional radiographers have been produced by Columbia-St. Mary's program. In 1952 the Columbia campus first became accredited by the JRCERT. In December of 1965, St. Mary's applied for the same and later was also granted accreditation. The two programs and facilities merged in 1995.

Columbia St. Mary's School of Radiologic Technology is a 24-month (six trimesters) program. In this program students receive instruction in radiographic procedures, anatomy, radiologic physics, pathology, and radiation biology. Students also have to complete clinical course work. Upon graduation the student is prepared to take the diagnostic radiography certification examination sponsored by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).

This program takes pride that its graduates are meeting the health care needs of metropolitan Milwaukee , and the health care needs of the surrounding areas. The school is located in a diverse community- comprised of different ethnic groups, lifestyles, and economic classes and ages.

The program's graduates have also achieved 100% pass rate on the ARRT examination for the past 3 straight years.

Affiliation and Accreditation

CSM School of Radiologic Technology is an accredited school. We have met and maintained the professional standards of a radiology program as mandated by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). This is in conjunction with the American Medical Association, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), and the Association of Educators in Radiologic Sciences (AERS).

CSM School of Radiologic Technology is affiliated with Concordia University, Carroll University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marian University, and Mount Mary College. Students enrolled in these institutions should apply through their respective school. Please contact the radiography program advisor for more information. After successfully completing academic criteria for one of the universities as well as the radiology program, students will hold the credentials of B.S., R.T.R. (Bachelaureate of Science in Radiologic Technology).

Non-baccalaureate degree students ("community students") are eligble to apply for admission to the program based on certain criteria (more information can be found under the "Admissions/Academics" link on this site)

Mission Statement

Columbia St. Mary's School of Radiologic Technology (CSM-SORT) is dedicated to the preparation of students who are competent in the entry-level employment skills of a Radiologic Technologist. It is also our goal to provide the student with the necessary clinical and academic experiences to enable them to successfully complete the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) certification exam. As part of our mission, we impress upon the student how these goals are met while preserving the dignity of every person with compassion and care of the highest standard.

Philsophy Statement

The philosophy of the program is to maintain a teaching facility in and for the community. To offer a high quality educational program for the development of technical skills and personal qualities of the student, both of which are necessary to provide exceptional patient care.

We believe education is a joint responsibility of both the student and the school. Education presents itself in many ways, therefore students must exhibit an inquisitive nature to take advantage of non-traditional learning opportunities. In many ways, the students initiate and direct their own learning, enabling them to exceed beyond the entry level performance of a radiographer.

Program Goals

The School of Radiologic Technology has teh following goals:

  1. The graduate will possess the didactic knowledge and the clinical skills necessary to achieve entry-level competency in radiologic technology.

  2. The graduate will communicate effectively and professionally in the medical environment and function as a team member in the radiology department.

  3. The graduate will demonstrate the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to act appropriately in non-routine and emergency situations.

  4. The graduate will practice their discipline with an obligation to abide by moral, legal and professional standards.

  5. To maintain CSM School of Radiologic Technology within compliance of the Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiologic Sciences provided by the Joint Review Committee Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
