In June 1901, Miss Olive B. Knowlton,
a registered nurse and Dr. Nathaniel A. Grey founded Knowlton Hospital
and Training School. Miss Knowlton served as the Schools first
Superintendent of Nurses from 1901 till she resigned in 1909.
According to a compilation of facts written by Miss Adeline Hendricks
in 1943, the earliest record found is dated October, 1905,
giving a list of all the students then in Knowlton Hospital School
of Nursing, However, there were two classes graduated before that
time, one in 1903, one in 1904. The 1903 list of graduates as far
as we know were Ethel Fairweather, Catherine Hallahan Zabel, Albertine
Luebke, Elizabeth McDonald, Mayme Tote and Edith Turney. In 1904,
the list included Margaret Butler, Anna Goodman, Mary Herfort and
Cora Warren.
Beginning October 1905 the students in the school are listed as
follows: Mrs. Robbins, Miss De Quine, Marshall, Rice, Johnson, Telgener,
Wentworth, Louzian, Gunderson, Schaffer, Smith, Mathews, Tinkham,
English, Lathrop, Riley, Hickey, Franey, Adams, Olson, Farrell,
Hastings, Evans, Edwards, Carr, Wargin, Skinner, Shea and Connor.
A Miss Jenkins entered in November, 1905 and was accepted
in December. Misses Selbough, Matts, Hackett, and Wipperman entered
in December, 1905. Not all of these young ladies were fortunate
enough to receive the diploma. A few reasons for leaving or being
dismissed will be interesting: such remarks as these appear on the
pages, not strong enough for work, gave up on
account of hard work , dismissed, work unsatisfactory,
not interested in work, not fitted for the work.
Of those who entered besides the two classes already named as graduates,
the following were also graduated from Knowlton Hospital School
for Nurses: Louise De Quine, Henrietta Gunderson, Martha Johnson,
Levine Louzian, Olive Marshall, Stella Mathews, Loretta Rice, Sarah
Robbins, Anne Smith, Emma Turney, Mellie Willis, Alice Schaffer,
Laura Telgener, Winifred Carr, Tillie English, Eleanor Evans, Alice
Worgin.
The last class to graduate from Knowlton Hospital School for Nurses
was a group of six. They were: Bevie Hackett, Johanna Maas, Fannie
Selbough, May Riley, Mellie Hiskey and Helen Wipperman.
