Applying for Aid

The purpose of financial aid is to help students afford the cost of higher education.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a federal application that helps determine the student’s ability to pay in a uniform, consistent manner.

There are six easy steps to follow in order to complete a FAFSA:

  1. Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN).  If you are considered a dependent student you will need to have one parent also apply for a PIN number.

  2. File your FAFSA before the Columbia College of Nursing priority deadline of March 15.

  3. Review the Student Aid Report you receive back from the U.S. Department of Education for accuracy.  If there are any errors, submit corrections.  Remember: errors will delay the processing of your financial aid award.

  4. Make sure you have turned in any additional documents that are requested from the financial aid office.  Not all students will need to turn in additional documents. You will be notified via your CCON email if you have missing information that is delaying the processing of your aid application.

  5. Receive and understand your financial aid award.   Remember that you must actively accept the aid you are offered.  Log into the SONIS Web student portal to do this.

  6. First time CCON Federal Direct Loan borrowers must complete entrance loan counseling and a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note before any loan funds will be disbursed.

As a recipient of Federal, State and Institutional funds, you have certain rights and responsibilities. Please ensure that you read and understand these before you apply for financial aid.
